Changes in the Education System The focus of the education system has changed drastically in the past twenty-six years. Approximately forty percent of elementary schools have already removed or reduced recess time, or are in the process of doing so, in comparison to the ten percent reported in 1989 (â€Å"Recess and the Importance of Play† , n.d.). Not only is recess important, but all types of play have been demonstrated to be beneficial to school aged children. Play is essential to healthy development encompassing mental, emotional, and physical well-being in all children. The Main Components of Play Play is classified into four categories that often complement each other. They are broken up into dramatic, manipulative, physical, and creative†¦show more content†¦Finally, under Cooperative Play, all children involved are assigned a particular leadership position and all of the kids involved in the activity work together and create compromises. Play Can Relive Stress Placed on Students In the past few years, national education standards have placed pressure on both teachers and their pupils to excel on high stakes tests and to achieve goals through state standards, such as Common Core and Reading First. Some schools have decided to eliminate recess, and focus purely on academics, in hope to raise test scores and achieve â€Å"academic excellence† as Tara Parker-Pope states. Researchers believe that academic pressure placed upon children is linked with adolescent rage, as well as behavior problems in the classroom (Miller, 2009). With the denial or limited amount of recess, students are not given the chance to release their aggression, resulting in melt downs in the class and/or refusal to complete assignments. Play Teaches Important Life Skills On the other hand, play is said to teach children important life skills ranging from communication, to dealing with emotional issues. On the communication side, when children play, games especially, they are practicing communication skills with their peers through negotiating, rule explaining, sharing, waiting for their turn, and so on (Isenberg Jalongo, 2010).
